S. sailor captured by Barbary pirates in 1785 who, after years of slavery, becomes secretary to the Dey of Algiers; self-published. The writing is exquisitely sharp, the plot clever and enthralling. The beginning reminded me of All the Light You Cannot See, not a bad comparison, but a sad one.
